![]() A private water company formed in 1853 to provide water to the inhabitants of the Black Country, South Staffordshire Water PLC supplies a population of nearly 1.25 million, over an area of almost 1,490 square kilometres. The area of supply stretches from the edge of Ashbourne in the north, to Halesowen in the south, and from Burton on Trent in the East to Kinver in the West. Water supplies are drawn from two major surface water sources, Blithfield Reservoir in the north and Chelmarsh in the south, together with 27 borehole stations. In total, these sources supply an average of 331 megalitres (Ml) per day. The main treatment works is on the River Severn at Hampton Loade, with a maximum output of 215 Ml a day. In the north, a large reservoir at Blithfield supplies a maximum of 80 Ml a day to Seedy Mill Treatment Works near Lichfield. Treated water is distributed via 25 service reservoirs and 5,722 kilometres of mains. South Staffordshire Waters headquarters are in Walsall, where the main laboratory is located. To ensure the quality of the supply over 30,000 samples are taken each year and analysed by modern instrumentation. Also on site is the Control Room - manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
