Buying Petrol

Cheapest Petrol

Buy the cheapest fuel along your route. If you use a regular route, make a mental note of the prices charged by petrol stations along it and close by, then plan re-fuelling stops. Do not wait until your tank is almost empty, filling at the next petrol station regardless of cost.

Register with the Petrolprices.com website: by entering your postcode it will display a list of current cheapest petrol stations within your area. There is often a 5 or 6 per cent difference between the cheapest and most expensive forecourt. If you fill your car weekly, that is a saving of around £140 per year. +

Correct Grade:

Only use High Performance fuel if your car will benefit. Many petrol stations sell ‘high performance fuels’, yet there’s little or no performance difference for most standard cars, so only fill up with these fuels if you have a car that has been designed to use such petrol correctly.

Promotions:

Look out for supermarket promotions. Supermarkets often offer petrol promotions, often in the form of ''spend £20 and get 5p off voucher''. Remember: by spending £20 on fuel three times instead of just one fill of £60, you will get three vouchers!

Refuelling:

Whilst it is human nature to fill the tank (and get the painful bit over), consider limiting the amount you put in. Fuel adds weight to the car, so by half-filling twice as often you will be carrying a lower average weight of petrol, lightening your car and improving mpg.

If you must totally fill the car, stop filling as soon as the pump automatically clicks off. Your tank is not designed to take more.

Night-filling

Fill up when it is cold. Although the differences are minute, you actually get very slightly more when the temperature is low. Pumps are calibrated by volume, so by filling up at night or early morning when it’s colder do get a minuscule bit more.

It might only save you a few pence over the lifetime of the car, but it will give you a psychological boost!
