Less
Use:
|
For
short trips consider walking or getting a bike. If you are over 60, use
you entitlement to a bus pass.
|
Air
conditioning:
|
Air
conditioning and climate control are very inefficient and uses a lot of
fuel, so make ensure they are only used when absolutely necessary.
|
Switch
off:
|
Start
the engine only when you are ready to drive off and switch off the
engine as soon as you reach your destination. If you have to remain
stationary for any length of time, switch the engine off, but dont
switch off when in motion - your steering will probably get locked!
|
Speed:
|
For
every 5 miles per hour that you drive over 60mph fuel economy
deteriorates by around 10%.
|
Tyre
Pressure
|
In
particular, low tyre pressure increases the drag on a car, generating
more fuel consumption. Regularly check the pressures. Fuel consumption
can be reduced by 5% by keeping your tyres inflating to the correct
pressure.
|
Car
Maintenance:
|
Using
the recommended motor oil and replace your air filter when necessary
will also aid fuel ecconomy.
|
|
Weight:
|
The
lighter your car is, the less effort it needs to make to accelerate. So
clear out junk from the boot, and do not carry any unnecessary weight.
|
|
Roof
Rack:
|
Remove
your roof rack.Even an unloaded roof rack adds a great deal wind
resistance to the car, which would have been aerodynamically designed.
The increased drag and makes the engine work harder.
|
|
Windows:
|
Closing
the windows and skylight will make the car more aerodynamic and even
keeping the bodywork waxed makes a small contribution, specially at
higher speeds.
|
|
Re-filling:
|
Don't
fill the tank right up Fuel is heavy, so by filling the car up you're
adding weight. The less fuel your car has in it, the more efficiently it
drives. So by filling the tank only, say, half full will make the car
run more efficient.
